my parents have been doing fall yardwork recently. cutting lots of dead branches, collecting leaves... every week they leave a barrel out for trash collection. "carbon sequestration!" my dad jokingly says. "if i let the trees rot in the backyard, all that carefully stored carbon would be released right back into the atmosphere!"

um, never heard that argument before!

i wonder how much of the additional CO2 in the atmosphere is due to trees being unsustainably harvested.
